Hi! I’m Melissa.
Lover of languages, hispanophile and wordsmith.
I’m a native English speaker with an undeniable passion for the Spanish language. I also happen to be a serious grammar nerd with an eagle eye for detail and a weirdly reliable memory.
I’ve been learning Spanish since I was five years old, as I was lucky enough to attend a Spanish immersion elementary school in the middle of the United States taught by native Spanish speakers. For me, the beauty of language learning is that you are never truly finished! I love gaining insights and knowledge through reading, travel and everyday research. The etymology of words and phrases fascinates me, as do colloquialisms and regional linguistic variations.
During college, I studied abroad in Spain. It didn’t change my life at all. Just kidding! It totally did — in every way imaginable. I ended up staying for 18 months and passed Spain’s esteemed DELE Exam (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) in the Mastery Level (C2).
I later went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in linguistics where I learned about everything that happened in my 5-year-old brain during my early exposure to a second language.
After getting distracted by the glamorous world of linguistics (thanks, Chomsky), I went back to my roots and decided to pursue a master’s certificate in translation. I've worked as a translator, proofreader, copy editor, and transcriptionist for over 10 years, both freelance and in-house.
Providing language services is what comes naturally to me and I look forward to working with you!
